Crochet unicorn

Use Marabu Textil paints to create your own yarn colours for a cuddly winged unicorn. The fibre content of your wool will make a huge difference to your finished colour so pick a yarn to match the final result you want. You may want to experiment with different wool fibres and timings to find the saturation you’re looking for. The higher the acrylic content, the paler your result. We do not recommend using pale coloured dyes on high acrylic content wools as the colour will not show well. For bold bright colours use a high wool or cotton content yarn.

Dying the wool

1. Fill a container with warm water and add a large amount of Marabu Textil. Wearing rubber gloves, mix the Textil thoroughly.

2. Add your wool to the mix and submerge in the dye. If your Textil hasn’t been thoroughly mixed you may get dark spots on your wool, to remove, simply use rubber gloves and rub gently whilst submerged.

3. Leave the wool in the dye for an hour, mix the wool every now and then to avoid a patchy finish. Remove the wool from the dye and gently squeeze as much water out as you can, be careful not to twist the wool. If you want the wool darker, submerge for longer, you may also wish to add more dye.

4. Lay the wool on a towel and roll the towel up to remove more water from it, then unwrap and leave to dry. Drying can take several days, when nearly dry you can put the wool in a washing bag and tumble dry on a low heat setting for around 20 minutes.

Assembly

1. Start by sewing the head to the top of the body so that the narrow end of the heads points downwards.

2. Attach the front legs by pinching the top of them flat and sewing through both sides, attaching near the top of the body, just beneath the head.

3. Pin the back legs into a sitting position, pinch the top of the legs flat and sew through both sides to join to the side of the unicorn. Work your way down the leg, sewing the inside of the leg to the body for several few rounds to create the curve of the legs, making it sit.

4. Sew the horn in the centre of the head and attach the ears either side an equal number of stitches away.

5. Fasten the wings to the unicorns back and weave in all ends.

6. Trim several 30cm lengths of the blue and blackberry yarns. Take two lengths of yarn, fold in half and pull through a stitch near the rump of your unicorn with the crochet hook. Pull the ends through the loop you have made to create a tassel, continue to work in this way, alternating colours, layering the mane and tail until you are happy. If you want, you can plait the mane and tail, tying with ribbon or yarn.

7. Cut several different sized flower shapes out of Craft Planet felt and sew to the head and tail area, these can be used to hide the tassel ends if you wish. For an extra touch, sew beads or buttons to the centre of the flowers.

8. Cut two circles out of Craft Planet Pink Felt and attach one a few stitches below each eye to add rosy cheeks to your unicorn with thread or fabric glue.

9. Use grey or black wool to add eyelashes to your unicorn.
